Boater Lost in Sound off Larchmont
The Coast Guard reports the search for Brooklyn sailor Eoin Curran has been called off, after failing to recover the man who disappeared Sunday when he fell off his sailboat near about 3:30 pm.
The Coast Guard now says Curran was 30 years old, not 20 as previously stated. He and two other people were taking their first sailing lesson; 4 folks had been aboard.
A Coast Guard spokesman says he "was coaching on the 23-foot (Sonar) sailboat, along with an instructor and two other men and women, when it reportedly listed 90 degrees on account of heavy winds from the squall. The missing man and the instructor fell overboard, the instructor was capable to get aboard the sailboat and a private flotation device was thrown to the man inside the water," but the Coast guard says he disappeared from sight.
Curran was reported to possess not been wearing a life jacket.
The boat originated in the New York Sailing College in New Rochelle.
This is the second incident off Larchmont this summer time of a boater lost in the Sound. Mount Vernon firefighter James Drago drowned June 26.
A Coast Guard rescue boat crew was around the scene again Monday afternoon and evening with all the County police. Sunday's search also involved the Larchmont Police Department, Police Division and the New Rochelle Police Department. A Coast guard helicopter from Atlantic City aided within the search.
